As you loyal readers already know, the Athens Farmers' Market LLC: Local and Sustainable official grand opening celebration was held this past Saturday (May 17th) at Bishop Park. And as anyone who attended knows, it was a celebration indeed. The ten local farms that participated succeeded in selling all of their produce before the market closed for the day—not that that dissuaded the steady flow of traffic into the market. Other Farmers' Market supporters and participants include Luna Bread Company, 1000faces Coffee, and a plethora of local artists and craftspeople to showcase their home-made jewelry, soaps, paintings, and so on. After all was said and done, the Athens Farmers' Market saw about 2,600 eager customers. Not only was Saturday a good day for local farmers; it marked the beginning of what will hopefully be a permanent staple of Athens culture, finally quenching the communal thirst for deliciously local produce that has overwhelmed similar projects in the past. The Athens community has been very supportive of the market and shows high hopes for its future. The Athens Farmers' Market will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bishop Park. Come next Saturday (May 24th) and show your supports for locally-grown, sustainable goods.
