Great news for all Common Ground supporters! We recently completed a reorganization process to focus our efforts to strengthen groups working for progressive social change in Athens. We're pleased to announce that out of that process, we have hired Jenna Moon as the first Executive Director of Common Ground.
Jenna first came to Common Ground as a volunteer coordinating special events, but she has grown to be a key program leader. Over the past year, she has joined in planning, securing funds for, and directing the Common Ground Internship Consortium, our program developing young nonprofit leaders and providing project support to our affiliate groups. This summer's participants supported the recent Taste Your Place event for P.L.A.C.E., planned the upcoming Multimodal Madness race for BikeAthens, and guided Free IT Athens through a strategic planning process. Please join us in welcoming Jenna in her new role as Executive Director! |

As you loyal readers already know, the Athens Farmers' Market LLC: Local and Sustainable official grand opening celebration was held this past Saturday (May 17th) at Bishop Park. And as anyone who attended knows, it was a celebration indeed. The ten local farms that participated succeeded in selling all of their produce before the market closed for the day—not that that dissuaded the steady flow of traffic into the market. Other Farmers' Market supporters and participants include Luna Bread Company, 1000faces Coffee, and a plethora of local artists and craftspeople to showcase their home-made jewelry, soaps, paintings, and so on. After all was said and done, the Athens Farmers' Market saw about 2,600 eager customers. Not only was Saturday a good day for local farmers; it marked the beginning of what will hopefully be a permanent staple of Athens culture, finally quenching the communal thirst for deliciously local produce that has overwhelmed similar projects in the past. The Athens community has been very supportive of the market and shows high hopes for its future. The Athens Farmers' Market will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bishop Park. Come next Saturday (May 24th) and show your supports for locally-grown, sustainable goods. |

The Athens Human Rights Festival—thanks to Citizen Advocacy, Common Ground Resource Center, a loyal coordination staff, and many others—celebrated their hard-earned 30th anniversary earlier this month. We're proud to report the festival a grand success—and how could it not be? Social interest in the kinds of issues the festival advocates has been building and building as the 2008 presidential election inches closer; all the resulting political discourse has helped make this year's Human Rights Festival that much more significant. It's prime time to make change. The downtown street celebration, dedicated to the loving memory of Eve Carson, featured a throng of politically-active musicians such as Jackpot C ity, Dubconscious, The Maybes, Fleeta Mitchell, Tommy Jordan and the String Theory—who haven't missed a festival in all its glorious thirty years—and the list goes on. There were also over thirty orators, each with their own individual ideas and messages; they spoke on behalf of education, gay and lesbian rights, immigration issues, economic justice, marijuana law reform... Why, there were even llamas. Long live the hell-raisers, let's hear it for thirty more. For more information and the full Human Rights Festival 30th Anniversary webloid, visit www.athenshumanrightsfest.org. |
